21 Premieres in Boston!

Monday night, Boston got to see the story of the 'MIT kids who took Vegas for millions' up on the big screen. Due out in theaters March 28th, Sony's 21 is the film adaptation of the book Bringing Down the House, by Harvard Grad Ben Mezrich .

Filmed at Boston University, the South Street Diner, and the Boston Convention Center in the Seaport District, the Boston influence is definitely present in this movie. The film boasts performances by Jim Sturgess, Kevin Spacey, and Kate Bosworth.

The flick's star, Jim Sturgess (also appearing in the current hit The Other Boleyn Girl), claims he had no idea what he was talking about in the movie. Boston Herald's Inside Track reports: “I was always more into words, history, English and drama - anything other than science and math,” the British cutie laughed. “But it does have a little more appeal to it now, yeah!”

Sturgess portrays Jeff Ma, who is banned for life from playing blackjack in any casino. Both Ma and Sturgess attended the pre-film festivities at the Four Seasons Hotel, the premiere at AMC Boston Common Theater, and the after party at hip club, Mantra.

Be sure to pick up the book and catch the movie this month!

New Mass Tax Incentive = More Movies

Massachusetts just added another chip to sweeten the pot for Hollywood filmmakers. Yes, Massachusetts instituted a 1st round of tax incentives in late 2005 but this new round bumps up that commitment. That only spells good things for the future of Boston Movie Tours and future filming hotspots.

If you are into the details, here's the press release.

Governor, Legislative Leaders Unveil New Film Tax Credit Proposal
Plan would make Massachusetts an attractive home for motion picture films, television

BOSTON – Thursday, May 17 –Governor Deval Patrick, Senate President Therese Murray and House Speaker Salvatore F. DiMasi today unveiled a series of tax incentives to make Massachusetts a more attractive destination for motion picture and television production projects, a plan that will make the Commonwealth more competitive with other states and could bring millions of dollars in new investment and economic activity.

“Massachusetts has a lot going for it—fabulous locations, a gifted and experienced crew base, and a long tradition of great movies made here,” said Governor Deval Patrick. “But the creative economy is extremely mobile and we cannot stand still in the face of stiff challenges from other states. Supporting an expansion of the film tax credit is one major step we can take in attracting the kind of businesses we need to keep our economy vibrant and competitive.”

The legislative package announced today expands a highly-successful law passed in 2005 that offers production companies a series of tax credits and exemptions to encourage film production. In the 15 months since the credits took effect, Massachusetts has attracted three films to shoot and locate here, including Disney’s Game Plan and Gone Baby Gone and 21 by Sony. Prior to the law’s passage, Massachusetts had only four studio films in seven years.

"The film tax credit has been one of the Legislature's most successful methods for motivating the industry to make Massachusetts the backdrop for numerous movies," said Senate President Murray. "With larger productions waiting in the wings, this modest investment will be a greater enticement for the film industry to choose Massachusetts over other states."

“For Massachusetts, it is not just pride we feel when Oscar-winning movies are filmed here – it means millions of dollars pumped into our economy, local jobs for local workers and a worldwide boost to our thriving tourism industry,” said Speaker DiMasi. “This bill will help Massachusetts stay competitive with states trying to woo the movie industry and will produce immediate and long-term benefits for our economy.”

The proposed legislation increases the percentage of payroll that companies can apply for income tax credits against from 20 percent to 25 percent, and allows credits of up to 25 percent of other production expenses.

Under the current law, credits are limited to $7 million per film and apply only to films costing $250,000 or more. The proposal released removes the cap and lowers the $250,000 floor to $50,000, for purposes of both the income tax credit and the sales tax exemption.

Thirty-nine other states have enacted film tax credits of their own, including Rhode Island and Connecticut.

The legislation also adds “digital media project” to the definition of “motion picture” and requires the Commissioner of Revenue to report annually on motion picture production activity generated by the revised film tax credit and its net revenue effect.

21 Reasons for Traffic

The movie 21 threw a wrench into traffic this past Sunday. The entire Mass Ave Bridge was closed for filming of this new Kevin Spacey flick about MIT students who find a system for beating the odds in Vegas.

We got close enough to witness some of the helicopters filming the scene from the air. It is not every day that a helicopter flies about 200 feet over the water.

Apparently, the lead actor Jim Sturgess is riding a bike across the bridge.

21 Filming at Harvard Medical School

Yesterday, 21 with Kevin Spacey and Lawrence Fishburne took a little trip down to the Longwood Ave area to do some filming. According to the Boston Herald and the Boston Globe, Sony offical named the movie 21 this past Monday. The movie is loosely based on the true story of how bunch of MIT students beat the system in Vegas.

We got the call from movie buff Ken in the morning and headed down to the area in the afternoon. According to one of the crew members, The Massachusetts College of Art served as the "Holding Area." That is basically where the extras and crew gather for lunch and where they hang out awaiting filming to start.

The actual filming took place in front of Harvard Medical School on Longwood Ave. Or at least that is where all the cameras were set up.

Tours Begin April 7th

It is just over a week away from opening day of the 2007 season for Boston Movie Tours. We just spent the day training some very talented new movie guides. Spent a good amount of time covering all the new The Departed locations including the new stop at the building where the climatic rooftop scene took place.

We also covered some of the new locations for Kevin Spacey's new 21 gambling movie. It is definitely going to be an exciting season.

Spring Break Brings Movies to Boston University

While the students are on the beach drinking Banana Daiquiris, Columbia Pictures is transforming Boston University into a Hollywood set for Kevin Spacey’s new movie, 21. Our guess is the campus will serve as a stand-in for MIT and some Las Vegas scenes. The movie is about the true life story of MIT whiz kids who developed a system for beating the Las Vegas odds.

If you are in the Kenmore Square area, you will probably notice all the film trucks lining the street. According BU Today, the film friendly Boston University is working with the studio while the students are away.

Both the School of Management and the College of Arts and Sciences are on the list.

Boston Film Location: Kevin Spacey at South Street Diner

The South Street Diner was center stage last Friday for Kevin Spacey’s new movie 21 starring Kate Bosworth and Laurence Fishburne (Thanks DJ for the email).

The South Street Diner is a classic late night diner over in the South Station area. According to The Boston Herald, the nighttime film location set the stage for the stars to discuss their gambling strategy.

Will we add it to the Boston Movie Tour? Only time will tell. And thanks for the mention in the article.

Based on Ben Mezrich’s bestseller, “Bringing Down the House: The Inside Story of Six MIT Students Who Took Vegas for Millions,” the movie began filming in late February 2007.
